URBANARA Terra
From the beginning, it has been a priority of ours to produce natural, sustainable products using ethical and conscious processes. We believe in sharing our knowledge with our customers, so our most sustainable and environmentally friendly products are clear and accessible to all. Find out more about our four most sustainable product characteristics below.
Organic cotton is a sustainable and socially conscious material that is grown and processed using methods with a low environmental impact. The growing of organic cotton uses 71% less water and 62% less energy than conventional cotton. Organic growing processes also have health benefits for soil and help build a biologically diverse agriculture, as well as reducing the use of toxic pesticides and fertilisers – organic cotton is also 80% rain-fed, reducing pressure on local water systems, which are also kept cleaner thanks to the lack of harmful chemicals used.
We believe in the beauty of reusing pre-loved materials, so we strive to make our recycled home accessories even more beautiful than they were in their past lives. Made from recycled cotton, linen, silk, or plastics such as acrylic and PET, our recycled fibres make the most of materials we already have and reduce overall consumption. Recycled PET, for example, has a lower carbon footprint than virgin PET, and 75% less CO2 emissions than virgin polyester, the environmental impact is far more favourable than other synthetics, plus has reduced transport costs and emissions. This fantastic material gives used plastics a new life as strong, versatile and attractive environmentally friendly materials.
Chemically treated and dyed materials often use a process involving a range of toxins, such as dioxins, heavy metals, and formaldehyde – all of which are known carcinogens. Unfortunately, commercial fabric dyeing and treatment can also cause a large amount of chemicals to flow into local water sources, as many fabrics lose 20% of these toxins in run-off. Each year, the global textile industry discharges tens of thousands of tonnes of toxins into rivers and streams, polluting them and having a negative effect on the surrounding environment and communities. Untreated products bypass these harsh dyeing and chemical processes, embracing the natural tones of the materials and helping the environment to stay cleaner.
Fast-growing materials are known to take less of a toll on the planet, leaving soil healthier and preventing erosion. Kauna grass is one such material; this eco-friendly water reed dries naturally in the sun, using no chemicals or machinery in its production process. Jute, also, is a fast-growing plant that can be cultivated in crop rotations, enriching the fertility of the soil it grows in, and emits a considerable amount of oxygen which can help balance the CO2 that growing them produces. Like jute, rattan is incredibly fast-growing and abundant – just one plant can reach hundreds of metres in length.
Our packaging
We maintain the same standards for our packaging as we do for our products. From warehouse to your door, we strive to minimise plastic usage, and use only FSC certified paper and card for our packaging; the FSC certificate means that the materials we use come from sustainable forestry schemes, where trees harvested are either replaced or allowed to regenerate naturally.
